Porsche catches fire, destroys White Township garage
A residential garage in White Township was destroyed tonight after a Porsche inside burst into flames.
The Oxford Volunteer Fire Department received a call that a car parked inside a garage at 239 Buckhorn Drive had caught fire and spread to the garage shortly before 7 tonight. It took firefighters from six fire companies half an hour to contain the blaze, which destroyed the car and the garage, said Fire Chief Calvin Inscho of the Oxford Volunteer Fire Department.
Inscho said the car and the garage, which was not attached to the home were total losses. The home was undamaged, and no one was reported injured.
Property owner Cynthia Hausamann said she, her husband and their two daughters had returned this afternoon from a week-long vacation to Long Beach Island, N.J. Before leaving to go to the Belvidere National Night out at Good Will Fire Company No. 1, they plugged the battery to their 2006 Porsche Carrera into a charger.
The family of four was eating hot dogs at the firehouse when firefighters began running for their gear.
"I thought, 'Wow, this must be a big one,'" Hausamann said.
She asked a firefighter where the fire was and eventually learned their neighbor had called in a garage fire from across the street. Realizing it was their home, the family raced home. Cynthia Hausamann said she was more concerned about her husband speeding home through the winding roads on his motorcycle than she was about the car.
"I could care less about the garage," she said.
Neighbors managed to save the family dog, Dallas, a chocolate Lab whose kennel was about 10 feet from the garage. When the dog refused to leave the garage, the neighbors ending up dragging the entire kennel away.
Walter Gross, one of the neighbors to save Dallas, said his wife was screaming that the car's gas tank could explode, but he was determined to get the pet to safety.
"I was (concerned for my safety), but I didn't want to see the dog get burnt," he said.
